In this research, we explore the intersection between traditional Chinese dance (Korean and Wa ethnic groups) and contemporary dance. We do not learn fixed choreographies. Instead, we extract the “breathing” of Korean dance and the “tremor” of Wa culture in order to develop a new, modern movement language from them. An experiment for both body and mind.
We investigate the physical polarities of two Chinese ethnic groups through the lens of contemporary dance:
Korean Ethnicity: Focus on “breathing” (inner breath) – sinking, suspension, and flowing curves.
Wa Ethnicity: Focus on “tremor” (physical pulse) – grounding, rebound, and explosive energy (hair-swing elements).
Our work includes different research phases:
I. Physical Deconstruction
Breath Sampling: Exercises based on Korean breathing techniques (欲动先静 – stillness before movement).
Impulse Activation: Micro-vibrations and joint mobility inspired by the Wa style.
II. Vocabulary Input & Technique
Segment A (Korean): “The Infinite Line.”
Focus on the coordination of the upper body and arms (flow vs. resistance).
Segment B (Wa): “The Pulse of the Earth.”
Focus on the transmission of power from the feet through the spine to the tips of the hair.
III. The Laboratory – Experimental Phase
Hybrid Exercises: What happens when Korean breathing is combined with the Wa impulse?
Dramaturgical Improvisation: We develop short sequences based on the themes of “memory” and “breaking with tradition.”
IV. Presentation & Reflection
Collective Flow: A short, structured improvisation in space as a conclusion.
Feedback Round: Exchange and reflection on the physical experience.
